911 Express Kiddie Train

All Aboard!

The North Fork Ambulance launched the 911 Express Kiddie Train in the summer of 2011 as a Public Relations and community outreach tool. The train has been chugging around the North Fork Valley, Delta and Montrose County to events ever since brining joy to kids of all ages and helping spread the message of the North Fork Ambulance Association.

What is the 911 Express?

Designed and built from scratch, the 911 Express is a 17-car plastic pickel barrel train with seats built into each barrel for children to ride in. The train is pulled by a custom designed locomotive which is actually a converted lawn tractor that is complete with sound effects and fake smoke! The entire project was designed and built by Crawford Board Member Don Geddes. The Association is very grateful for the countless hours of design, construction and maintenance Don has contributed to the Kiddie Train Program and the Association.

Each "car" of the train, is a recycled 55 gallon PVC pickel barrel that has been bolted to a specially designed frame, hollowed out on top and a seat installed, just large enough to accompodate an eager little train passenger!

How does it work?

The 911 Express is truly a feat of engineering. Even with 17 cars and a total length of over 60 feet, the last car of the train will track exactly where the locomotive last turned. The handling of the train is so impressive the driver can circle the train around itself, reverse direction and exit the circle without ever catching a car!

What kind of events does the 911 Express travel to?

The 911 Express rolls into a variety of public events throughout the North Fork Valley and Western Colorado. A few of the events we can be found at include:

  • Crawford Pioneer Days - June
  • Paonia Cherry Days - July
  • Delta County Fair - August
  • Montrose Main in Motion - throughout the summer
  • West Elk Mine Company Picnic
  • Other events per request

How do I schedule the 911 Express at my event?

Kid in Train

If your group or business is planning a large gathering with children and you would like to entertain them, please consider bringing in the 911 Express. The 911 Express is a great way to entertain children and all we ask for is a donation to the Association for the use of our time.

That's right - all rides are strictly by donations and we strive to make it to as many events as we can but sometimes we are limited by weather, other scheduling conflicts or lack of volunteers.

To reserve the train for your event, please contact Executive Director Kathy Steckel at 970-234-6169 or email her at
